Westrand Car Show - 1955 Ford Thunderbird

Ford – Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a nameplate that was used by Ford for their premier muscle-car from 1955 to 1997 and then again from 2002 to 2005. In that time there were over eleven model generations. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was produced in a number of body configurations through its production life, including four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation produced as a two-seat convertible.

The 1958 addition of a rear seat to the Thunderbird, while initially controversial, marked the creation of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury vehicles. An American interpretation of the grand tourer, personal luxury cars were built with a higher emphasis on driving comfort and convenience features over handling and high-speed performance.

The Mercury Cougar was based on the T-Bird from 1968 to 1998. The Lincoln Continental Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, Lincoln Mark VII, and Lincoln Mark VIII were also based on the standard T-Bird.

In the fifty years from 1955 to 2005 Ford produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds. There is a grey area regarding the name of the Thunderbird. Some say that the word “thunderbird” is a reference to a legendary creature for North American indigenous people. It is considered a supernatural bird of power and strength. Others say it was named after the Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

For a few years the Thunderbird and Mustang were produced at the same time but eventually, after the demise of the T-Bird, the Ford Mustang became their Premier Muscle Car.

Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
