Westrand Car Show - DAF 46 and Goliath

DAF 46

The DAF 46 was a small family car that was manufactured by the Dutch company DAF. It was introduced in November 1974 to ultimately replace the DAF 44. At the time of the launch it was announced that the two cars would be sold “alongside” one another, which indicates that DAF had substantial stocks of the earlier model, as yet unsold.

The DAF 46 was a little more luxurious than its predecessors and was carpeted throughout and equipped with cloth covered reclining seats. It also had a redesigned gear lever and additional dash mounted warning lights. The car retained its defining DAF variomatic transmission (CVT), but this was now coupled with a conventional differential which was said to improve noise levels and extend drive-belt life.

Reports suggest that the DAF 46 had safer handling than its predecessor, but acceleration was still slow, at a time when most European manufacturers were improving top speed and acceleration as technology improved and new models were announced. Still, Holland is a small country and a good public transport infrastructure so big powerful cars were unnecessary.

A total of 32,353 DAF 46s were produced in the few years it was on the market.

In February 1976, it was announced that the DAF 46 would be phased out that same year but that DAF would ensure adequate parts and service backup despite the disappearance of the DAF brand from passenger car show rooms. DAF had sold their motor car factory and interests to Volvo who in turn upgraded the DAF 66 and re-branded it the Volvo 66

NOTE ON FEATURED IMAGE The Daf 46 at the Goliath mill, close to Eemshaven. The mill is called Goliath because of the relatively large size of the wicks for Groningen mills (a 23.5-meter flight). Nowadays it seems more like a dwarf among modern wind turbines. The work of art of the reclining man is one of the 5 resting points of artists Maree Blok and Sander Lugthart.

The Westrand Car Show is a Classic Car Show. TO QUALIFY FOR ENTRANCE TO A COMPETITIVE CLASS, VEHICLES MUST HAVE BEEN BUILT OR REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1999 OR EARLIER. Only the first 180 QUALIFYING vehicles will receive a commemorative medallion. See the list of classes below and the entrance form. Remember its a fun day, so don’t take it too seriously.

Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
