Westrand Car Show - 1928 Bugatti Type 43 Grand Sport

Automobiles Ettore Bugatti” was a French car manufacturer of high-performance cars founded in 1909 in the then-German city of Molsheim, Alsace by the Italian-born industrial designer Ettore Bugatti.

The Bugatti name lasted only 28 years and in that time around 8000 cars were built.

Bugattis soon developed a name for being beautiful and very successful in motor racing. Some famous Bugatti models include the Type 35 Grand Prix, the Type 41 “Royale”, the Type 57 “Atlantic” and the Type 55 sports car.

Jean Bugatti, the son of Ettore Bugatti died in 1939 and Ettore himself in 1947. That, together with the intervening war years lead to the demise of the car business. The name continued in the aviation industry as Bugatti had an aeroplane spare parts factory.

Following Ettore Bugatti’s death 1947 , the business declined further the last Bugatti was sold in 1952

Bugatti was noticeably focused on design and engineering excellence. Engine blocks were hand scraped to ensure that the surfaces were so flat that gaskets were not required for sealing. Bugatti famously described his arch competitor Bentley’s cars as “the world’s fastest lorries” for focusing on durability. According to Bugatti, “weight was the enemy”.

The Bugatti Marque is now owned by Volkswagen who released the Bugatti Black Car or in 2019. It would seem that this move together with the Bugatti Divo, Veyron and Chimon signals a rebirth of a famous Marque.
