REALLY REALLY CHEAP ENTRY LEVEL CARS OF THEIR TIME
The Ford Popular was a small car with very little creature comforts. They were basic in the extreme and were designed to bring really cheap cars to the british motoring public. The first Ford Popular was the 103E and the body shell was based on the old Anglias and Prefects of the time.Jaffles Stalletjie Chip ‘n Dip Stalletjie
It was built from 1953 to 1959 as a two door sedan, with a 4 cylinder 1172cc engine. The only variant of the 2 door sedan was a small pick up but only a few of these were built in the UK. In Australia, however, the pickup was slightly different in that it was like our modern day “supercab” bakkies.
There you have it – a Cab and a half Bakkie, A drop hood Sports Bakkie and a Two Door Cheapie, and the cheapest car available in Britain in the 1950’s. These Ford Anglias also became extremely popular with the Street Custom and Hot Rod fans, for their light body weight and ease of conversion.
In 1959 the Ford Popular was redesigned, and again used the older discontinued Anglia body following the revamp of that particular model. The 100E also used the same 1172cc engine which had been slightly modified. This model was also stripped down to the bare necessities, but a de luxe version was made available which carried a few additional optional extras. The whole idea of this particular Ford range was to keep the cost of cars down. Obviously Austin, Morris and other British manufacturers had to follow suit to retain market share in a country that was still recovering fom the devastation of WWII. The Ford Popular in the 100E shape sold over 120000 units in it’s short lifespan of 3 years vindicating Ford’s decision to produce the car in the first place.
