The history of Vauxhall as a stand-alone brand is a tale of ownership changes and the rationalization of manufacturing processes and it thus becomes the history of at least three brands.
A man by the name of Alexander Wilson started a business in 1857 manufacturing pumps and marine engines. He in turn sold it in 1863 to A B Brown who manufacturing mobile cranes. It was forty years later before Vauxhall built their first Motor Car.
Then in 1925 the business was sold to General Motors. The Bedford Truck Division of Vauxhall was then established.
Vauxhall continued with their “own” designs for many years but GM was slowly aligning Opel (Their German brand) to Vauxhall. Eventually Vauxhall disappeared as an international brand and today it is only sold in UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands as Vauxhall while elsewhere the Opel badge is used.
In 2017 GM sold off the Opel operation (and therefore Vauxhall) to Groupe PSA (which owns, amongst others, Peugeot and Citroen).
There is talk of Vauxhall launching a whole new range of vehicles in 2020 but it remains to be seen if they are Opels in disguise or really new designs.
