The Mazda Motor Corporation produced over 1,200,000 cars in 2016 which was about 20% less than in 2015. Still, it’s am awful lot of new vehicles. When Mazda started in 1920 it was called the Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd. Mazda sounds a little easier don’t you think?Pannekoek Stalletjie
Mazda started making a three-wheel truck that looked like an over-sized motorbike. It was ideal for rural and urban applications in both Japan and other Eurasian countries. Mazda then entered the car market, but only in 1960, when they launched the R 360 2 door coupe “Kei Car”. The R360 was followed two years later by the Carol which was in production in various forms until 2019.
In the meantime, Mazda’s interest in the rotary engines of German car manufacturer NSU meant the development and manufacture of the RX series of Mazdas. NSU built the Ro8o from 1967 to 1977 but the rotary engine, radical, light and extremely powerful, had reliability problems almost from the beginning. GM’s Cadillac brand, who were also keen to develop a rotary engine, decided to scrap their plans in view of these issues.
Mazda also developed and improved their normal internal combustion engines and today are the 15th largest car manufacturers in the world. They co-operated with other manufacturers and for a long time were partially owned by Ford and in various parts of the world re-badged versions of Fords were marketed as Mazdas and vice versa.
In recent years Mazda has re-engineered their entire range and are at last becoming a “standout” brand. If you are a Mazda fan there is a vast amount of information on Wikimedia and at the Mazda Worldwide sites. Mazda also have an active museum at their headquarters in Japan.
