The Riley Brand has an interesting history and although the brand disappeared in 1970 the company is a world leader in transmission systems, marine gearboxes and other heavy duty components under the PRM label.Worsbroodjies & Footlongs
From a company established to make bicycles and then later small motorcycles the business grew in various directions as a result of so many of the Original Riley’s sons were involved. Some in engine development, others in body building and yet others in development and research.
The Riley group goes back to 1890. The Company grew rapidly through the 1920s and 1930s. The Riley Engine Company produced 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder engines, while Midland built more than a dozen different bodies. but in 1938 Riley became part of the Nuffield group. The Nuffield Group was an umbrella body for BMC (Morris and Austin), MG, Riley and Wolseley as well as other business interests of Lord Nuffield (William Morris of Morris Motors)
Then, in 1968 the Riley brand, together with others were merged into British Leyland. In 1969 it was decided to stop manufacturing Rileys although unsold stock was sold off and some units were first registered in 1970. In yet another twist the Riley name now belongs to BMW.
Riley produced a range of cars with really exotic names that included Adelphi, ‘Continental'(Close-coupled Touring Saloon), Deauville, Falcon, Kestrel, Mentone, Merlin, Monaco, Stelvio, Victor, Ascot, Lincock, Alpine, Lynx, Gamecock, Brooklands, Imp, MPH, Sprite, Edinburgh and Winchester.
