Westrand Car Show - 1959 Berkeley T60

Berkeley T 60 Micro Car

Berkeley Cars of Bedfordshire, England produced economical sporting microcars with motorcycle-derived engines from 322 cc to 692 cc and front wheel drive between 1956 and 1960. Berkeley Coachworks were at the time one of the largest manufacturers of caravans in Europe

Entering the motorcar business was an ideal project for them as they had developed considerable skills in the use of Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP).The early cars were an immediate success on the home market, and several derivative models were produced over the four years of car production. But hard times lay ahead.

The company launched the 3-wheel T60 in September 1959. It was available as a hardtop and an open coupe. The T60 and later the T60/4 (which was a 4 seater) were driven by air cooled 328 cc Excelsior talisman engines mounted transversely and linked to a 4-speed gearbox.

The T60 was well received and some were even exported to the USA. But the caravan market collapsed towards the end of 1960, and Berkeley’s poor cash flow forced the company into liquidation in December 1960, taking its car manufacturing activities with it.  In all about 1800 T60 models and 50 T60/4 models were built in the 14 months of production.

The Berkeley factory was later used by Kayser Bondor Ltd to make women’s underwear, but it was demolished in 2002 and the site turned into a housing estate. A road named ‘Berkeley Close’ in the housing estate provides the only obvious link to the car factory.

Today there is an active owner’s club (the Berkeley Enthusiasts’ Club), which provides a range of parts and services aimed at preserving the remaining few hundred cars known to survive worldwide.
