Westrand Car Show - 1983 Datsun 280 ZX

1983 Datsun 280 ZX

The Datsun 280 ZX was the second of six generations of the Z Car. The Z Car was initially launched in Japan in 1969 as the Datsun Fairlady, with a 2.0 L engine. When launched in the US in 1970 the engine capacity was increased to 2.4 L and it was branded the 240 Z. Datsun/Nissan retained the Fairlady name in Japan only.

The Datsun 240 Z won immediate acceptance in the US selling over 135,000 units in the first three years. The car was upgraded to the 260 Z in 1974 with a 2.6 L engine. American emission regulations meant a reduction in power in the US model while it increased substantially in other markets. The 260 Z was slightly longer than the 240 Z and was also offered as a 2+2.

The 280 Z was introduced to the North American market in 1975. This model featured an increased engine capacity to 2.8 L, a Bosch fuel injection system and increased statutory safety features. While North America enjoyed the 280 Z the 260 Z was the only model available to the rest of the world.

In 1978 the second generation Z car (S130) or 280 ZX as we know it went on sale. It was a completely redesigned car with only the 5 speed manual gearbox and 2.8 L engine being retained. The 280 ZX was more luxurious, safer and more powerful.

T-Top models were introduced in 1980 and a turbocharged option was introduced in 1981.

The 280 ZX was wildly popular, being hailed as Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year for 1979 and going on to set a Z-car sales record of 86,007 units in its first year. While it received praise for taking the Z-car to further levels of comfort and performance, many enthusiasts also lamented the further emphasis on luxury over driving fun. The 280 ZX was replaced in 1984/1985 by the first 300 ZX. The legend continues.
