Westrand Car Show - 1932 Stutz Vertical Eight SV-16 Roadster

The Stutz Motor Car Company of America, Inc., was based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

It produced sports and luxury cars from 1911 to 1935. Their first car was entered in the Indianapolis 500 of the same year. The car finished 11th. Thereafter components such as fenders, lights etc were added to the racing model and they were marketed as Stutz Bearcats. The company concentrated on sports cars in the early days but from 1924 began to focus on luxury vehicles for the rich and famous.

Financial management was apparently not a strong point in the armoury of the directors and the company was often close to bankruptcy. At one stage the original founders (Stutz and Clayton) left the company and established themselves as opposition to the Stutz Company.

Eventually the company declared itself bankrupt even though its assets exceeded liabilities. The creditors finally agreed to a liquidation of the company.

In 1968 the name was revived and the new organization produced “retro” cars up until 1995, using standard General Motors vehicles as their base for the retro cars. They were never regarded as serious participants and less than a thousand “retros” were produced.

There was however a legacy from the endeavours of the company. The former Stutz Indianapolis factory is today known as the Stutz Business Center and is home to more than eighty artists, sculptors, photographers, designers, architects, and craftsmen.

Only the first 180 QUALIFYING vehicles will receive a commemorative medallion. Any newer vehicle is welcome to be entered as a “non-competitive vehicle” and to be placed on show just because of “the spirit of motoring” and the desire to share the joy that your wheels bring you, with all of the rest of us. Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
