On 8th April 1954 South African Airways Flight 201 disintegrated and crashed on a flight from London to Johannesburg via Rome and Cairo. The Crew of 7 captained by William Mostert and 14 Passengers all perished.The plane was one of BOAC’s fleet of Comets – The first Jet engined passenger planes in the world.
It was chartered to SAA. The Comet is still considered one of the most beautiful jet airliners ever built. It had a sad history though and more can be found on SAA Flight 201 as well as the De Havilland CometRib en Bief Burger Stalletjie Tea Garden, cakes and puddings
In the same year Bentley launched their Type R or, as it was better known, the Mark VII.
The Mark VII was an up-grade of the Mark VI of previous years and was really done to give Bentley time to complete the design of the Mk VII follow up. 2323 of these Mk VII were built, of which 295 had customized bodies by specialized coach builders. The Bentleys below indicate the coach builders involved. The cars that do not mention a coach builder are standard ex factory.

The cars were fitted with 6 cylinder 4.5L engines. The Mk VII were the last Bentleys where buyers could choose a manual or automatic gearbox. Since then all Bentleys have been automatic.

The Westrand Car Show is a Classic Car Show. TO QUALIFY FOR ENTRANCE TO A COMPETITIVE CLASS, VEHICLES MUST HAVE BEEN BUILT OR REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1999 OR EARLIER. Only the first 180 QUALIFYING vehicles will receive a commemorative medallion. Any newer vehicle is welcome to be entered as a “non-competitive vehicle” and to be placed on show just because of “the spirit of motoring” and the desire to share the joy that your wheels bring you, with all of the rest of us. See the list of classes below and the entrance form. Remember its a fun day, so don’t take it too seriously.
Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
The Westrand Car Show is an alcohol-free event and any person found to have in their possession or to be consuming alcohol will not be admitted and/or will be asked to leave the premises of Dr. Havinga School.
