NOTHING CAN GO WRONG CAN GO WRONG
According to Ford Historians the company felt that they were losing ground to General Motors and Chrysler. In 1955 the planning and design of a new car began and, as these things take time, the car was ready for it’s public launch towards the end of 1957.
When a manufacturer announces a new model late in the year the new is considered to be the following year’s car. So any Edsels sold in late 1957 are considered 1958 models. The Edsel was doomed to failure from the start. Even the name was a disaster. Edsel was the name of Henry Ford’s son and even he (Henry) did not want the car named after his son.Jaffles Stalletjie Kerrie en Rys Stalletjie
Ford spent millions in setting up this new car that they honestly believed was going to set them apart from the rest
The car was a disaster. The public, after all the hype, hated it. The press parodied it. Some of the jokes about it’s design are not re-printable on a family website. Despite their best efforts Ford sold less than half of what they expected to in the first two years. An announcement late in 1959 signalled the end of the Edsel Division. The last few thousand cars were sold as 1960 Edsel Rangers and despite the bad publicity it looks a little like the beginnings of a Ford Thunderbird.

Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
