Westrand Car Show - Auto Union 1000

Auto Union

You will recall in previous posts, the story of August Horch, who first established the Horch Company and thereafter the Audi Company. Mr. Horch sold his controlling interest in Audi to the largest investor in DKW – J.S. Rasmussen. This was in 1928. Rasmussen also acquired the American Motor Company called Rickenbacker and imported all the plant to manufacture 6 and 8 Cylinder engines. At the same time The Wanderer Car Company, which was in deep financial distress and was looking for a new business partner.

A new Company was formally formed in 1932 called Auto Union AG, Chemnitz. This new Company was an amalgamation of Horch DKW Audi and Wanderer. Use of the Audi name was suspended but the other three – Horch, DKW and Wanderer continued producing cars under their respective banners. Auto Union in the meanwhile developed a racing division and produced a series of world beating racing cars which competed as the “Silver Arrows”.

In 1964 Volkswagen acquired control of the Auto Union Group. A separate company was established to protect the heritage, trademarks and other intellectual property of Auto Union and the individual brands. The 4 rings then became the Emblem/Logo of the Audi name which Volkswagen positioned as a luxury brand which initially used common Volkswagen platforms – the Audi 80 and Volkswagen Passat for example.

The NSU Company was taken over by Volkswagen in 1969 and was merged into the Auto Union set up. Several of the Audi Models are still built in old NSU factories.

If you own any one of the Vehicle models that eventually became a fore runner of Audi you may want to enter it for the 31 August 2019 Show.
