To understand the heritage of Audi one has to follow the histories of eight different companies from 1896 right through to 1939 and the outbreak of World War II.
1896 Establishment of the Wanderer Co. Wanderer only built cars from 1911 to 1941. Thereafter they made military vehicles until end of WW II during which the company’s factory was bombed to destruction.
1899 August Horch forms a company to manufacture cars, which is only registered in 1904 as Horch & Cie.
1910 Horch registers a second business after leaving the first business. Legal action forces him to re-register the second Company as Audi.
1910/11 first Audi (Type A) launched followed quickly by the two yellow Audis above.
Some images of the earlier Audis are just not available, so there are some gaps in a pictorial history of the brand but the type K above was the first left hand drive to be manufactured in Europe. Prior to this all cars were right hand drive even though the Germans along with most of Europe drove on the right, as opposed to the UK.Poeding en Koek Worsbroodjies & Footlongs
1928 DKW produces it’s first car and in the same year acquires the Audi Company.
1928 DKW purchases the 6 and 8 cylinder engine building plant from Rickenbacker
1932 DKW (with Audi) amalgamates with The Original Horch Company and Wanderer Company to form Auto Union. Last Audi built.
1958 Daimler Benz buys 87% Auto Union.
1959 Daimler Benz buys balance of Auto Union.
1964 Volkswagen acquires 50% of Auto Union from Daimler Benz.
1965, with help of Government Volkswagen acquires balance of Auto Union.
1965 First Audi brought to market place since 1932.
1969 Auto Union merged with NSU. After production run-outs were utilised only the Audi name survives. Audi has several companies within the new modern organisation which looks after the Heritage, trade marks, and other historic paraphernalia.
One can read an article such as this and think well – so what? but one needs to think for a moment – what challenges the motor industry faced in the earlier years? The heroes of this story were around for :-
The Boer War
World War I
The great flu epidemic of the 1918’s
The great depression
World War II
The partitioning of Germany
The “modern” history of Audi will follow in another post …. in a few weeks, but before mid June 2019. In the emean time, there is a vast amount of knowledge available on the internet, including Wiki Media Wiki Pedia and Audi themselves.
