AC Cars 1956 – 2012

SOME BRITISH – SOME AMERICAN AND EVEN SOME SOUTH AFRICAN

To follow the entire AC Cars story please read AC Cars 1903-1955 before this post.
In 1956 AC launched the Aceca which was a break away from the established open sports cars. The following year they unveiled the AC Bristol and in 1958 the Ace Roadster. Then the story goes, that an American Carroll Shelby asked AC to build him a car that could take a big V8 engine. AC agreed provided Shelby provided a suitable engine. It’s alledged that Chevrolet rejected doing business with Shelby as they saw his move as competition to their own Corvette.

Ford, However, saw an opportunity to make a really big splash and duly supplied Shelby with a series of motors over the years. slight changes were made from time to time to accommodate bigger engines, different braking systems, suspensions and that kind of stuff that leaves many, like yours truly, completely confused.

So while Shelby and his team were continually modifying, adding new motors, and competing with Enzo Ferrarri for top spot in the competitive classes these brutes race in AC continued building cars. Quite frankly, they could have saved the time and effort as the next batch of AC Cars were not great (or at least I think that).

I read somewhere that this Italian designed AC Zagato was built in South Africa.

Now we get down to the real stuff the AC Cobra and all it’s variants of engines, chassis, and names including Dragon Snake and King Cobra. Some AC Cobras are real, others are replicas and yet others made under license. Still – Aluminium, Carbon Fibre, Red or Blue, there’s enough to stir the blood of most men.

This is the first Shelby AC Cobra

Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
