The Citroën 2CV was probably just as famous as the Citroën Traction Avant but for very different reasons. The Citroën 2CV did for the French what Henry Ford’s Model T had done for America and The Volkswagen Beetle for West GermanyKerrie en Rys Stalletjie
The Citroen 2CV was built in France from 1948 to 1998 and then for two years in Portugal. In Total more than 9, 000, 000 2CVs were built (The Yellow one above was used by James Bond (007) in the movie For Your Eyes Only)
The question is, why would anyone wan to build such a plain car and why did it sell so well? The answer is quite simple and it came about in the years after World War II. The French needed to design a vehicle that could be used mainly by farmers, that could drive on rough roads, carry a load to market and keep the passengers dry on rainy days. So the Citroen 2CV had very soft suspension, very strong corrugated side panels, a small little engine and they were very slow. But, they got the eggs to market without breaking them and then they could fold down the canvas roof and load long poles into the car to take back to the farm.
Perhaps, when this site is more complete i will add to this story of the car that was rated by motoring journalists as one of the most important adaptations of the motor car to make it “fit for purpose” From a humble beginning the French Citroen company had with just two model ranges – the Traction Avant and the 2CV became major players in the world of the motor car.
More was to come though, with the Citroen id and DS range of cars. That story will be for another day.
