Volvo has an interesting and successful history and contrary to other brands, survived the economic slump of the 80’s and the moves by other manufacturers to acquire additional brands.
Volvo started out as a subsidiary of SKF – makers of some of the finest bearings available to industry. The first Volvo rolled off the assembly line in April 1927 and almost from the start became leaders in vehicle design and vehicle safety.Poeding en Koek
Volvo is rated today as one of, if not, the safest car available. The list of inventions by Swedish engineers goes on and on and includes the first 3 point seat belt introduced to the PV444, the first rear facing child seat, side air bags, knee air bags and in the top of the range vehicles, additional head protection air bags.

The Volvo car division was acquired by Ford of America in 1999 and incorporated into Ford’s Prestige division which at the time included Jaguar and Land Rover. Volvo also acquired the Dutch manufacturer DAF and successfully sold a DAF/Volvo brand in the UK.
In 2010 Ford was forced, along with the other US Auto Groups to take drastic steps in restructuring their businesses. The world of motoring was changing rapidly with ever increasing competition from Japanese, Korean and European brands challenging the established order of things.
The Chinese Automobile Group – Geely – acquired Volvo in 2010 and in 2017 Geely also bought the British Lotus Group.
Volvo continue to be at the cutting edge of automobile technology particularly in safety and the development of electric engines. They already market a range of hybrids and intend to launch all electric cars in the near future. The race to be the front runners in the next generation of vehicles is hotting up. Skoda launch their electric cars in 2020 and Jaguar have recently launched the first all electric SUV
The Westrand Car Show is a Classic Car Show. TO QUALIFY FOR ENTRANCE TO A COMPETITIVE CLASS, VEHICLES MUST HAVE BEEN BUILT OR REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1999 OR EARLIER. Only the first 180 QUALIFYING vehicles will receive a commemorative medallion. Any newer vehicle is welcome to be entered as a “non-competitive vehicle” and to be placed on show just because of “the spirit of motoring” and the desire to share the joy that your wheels bring you, with all of the rest of us. See the list of classes below and the entrance form. Remember its a fun day, so don’t take it too seriously.
Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.
The Westrand Car Show is an alcohol-free event and any person found to have in their possession or to be consuming alcohol will not be admitted and/or will be asked to leave the premises of Dr. Havinga School.

The Westrand Car Show takes place annually and we try to get a broad range of interesting vehicles including veteran cars, vintage cars, classic cars. Street customs, muscle cars, hot rods, superLDVs and motorbikes. The Volvos featured above are typical of the cars we wish to attract.
