Singer

George Singer founded the Singer Company in 1875 and its focus was the making of both bicycles and Motorcycles. In 1901 The Singer Motor Company started making commercial vehicles and cars. The first Singer was known as the Singer Ten. The entire first years production in 1912 (50 cars) was bought by William Rootes who many years later owned the Rootes Group that acquired Singer in 1956.

After Chrysler bought the Rootes group the Singer name went into disuse. WWI interfered with production while manufacturing turned to support the war effort.  After WWI ended the Singer 10 continued selling , with minor improvements along the way, until 1923.

In 1922 Singer launched the Singer 15 which was a six cylinder 2 litre engine. After the 10 was discontinued in 1923 a newer revised car – The Singer 10/26 was launched in 1924. Singer had a string of successful vehicles before and after WWII but in 1956 the group ended up in the Rootes Group. The Singer Gazelle was merely a more upmarket Hillman Minx as Rootes continued their ever changing badging system. The Singer brand disappeared in 1970

The Westrand Car Show is a Classic Car Show. TO QUALIFY FOR ENTRANCE TO A COMPETITIVE CLASS, VEHICLES MUST HAVE BEEN BUILT OR REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1999 OR EARLIER. Only the first 180 QUALIFYING vehicles will receive a commemorative medallion. Any newer vehicle is welcome to be entered as a “non-competitive vehicle” and to be placed on show just because of “the spirit of motoring” and the desire to share the joy that your wheels bring you, with all of the rest of us. See the list of classes below and the entrance form. Remember its a fun day, so don’t take it too seriously.

Non-Competitive vehicles may enter at the gate on the day.

The Westrand Car Show is an alcohol-free event and any person found to have in their possession or to be consuming alcohol will not be admitted and/or will be asked to leave the premises of Dr. Havinga School.
