Bentley Motors Limited was founded in 1919 by W.O. and H M. Bentley. In 1931 Bentley went into receivership and was bought by Rolls-Royce Limited. The new company then also went insolvent and the British Government first nationalised the business and then broke it up into two different companies. The aerospace side (Rolls Royce Plc) and the automotive side in Rolls Royce Motors Limited. Rolls Royce retained the Bentley Motors Division. Then the Vickers Engineering Group owned the business from 1980 until 1998 which they then sold to Volkswagen.
The Bentleys were keen motor racing enthusiasts and spared nothing to develop the Bentley into a world beating race vehicle. They won Le mans 24 hour races regularly in the 1920’s. But the marriage with rolls Royce was not really the right move for Bentley and when all is said and done older Bentleys were merely Rolls Royces with different badging and slight changes to coachwork. Coachwork in the e4arly days of motoring allowed many car owners the opportunity to have their cars “tailored” in some way to suit their particular needs. One only has to look at vehicles owned by the Royal Family to see the results of great coachbuilding from companies like H J Mulliner.

Die Westrand Car Show is ‘n klassieke motorskou.
